چکیده

To improve biocompatibility of hydrophobic polymethyl methacrylate intraocular lens (PMMA IOL), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was immobilized by UV-induced graft copolymerization method. The hydrophilicity and chemical composition of the PMMA IOL surface after each step of surfaces modification were analyzed by contact angle (CA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The morphology of the IOL surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results revealed that the hydrophilicity of the HEMA-g-PMMA IOL samples were significantly and permanently improved. The surface biocompatibility of the modified IOL was evaluated by platelets adhesion experiments.

Surface Modification of Silicone Rubber Membrane by Microwave Discharge to Improve Biocompatibility

Wetability of biocompatible polymers can be improved by plasma surface modification. The purpose of this study was to surface modify an experimental poly (dimethylsiloxane) rubber (PDMS) material in order to improve its wetability and biocompatibility. Surface properties of the PDMS were characterized using contact angles measurement for wetability analysis. Samples of experimental silico...

Posterior capsular opacification and intraocular lens surface micro-roughness characteristics: an atomic force microscopy study.

OBJECTIVE Surface roughness parameters of various intraocular lenses (IOLs) biomaterials using atomic force microscopy (AFM) are compared. Variation, if any, in the micro-roughness properties of different IOLs made up of the same biomaterial is also explored. Retrospective analysis of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) incidence has been followed up for a period of four years post IOL impla...

Silicone IOL biocompatibility--not all silicone is the same.

In their recent paper, Chang and coauthors 1 suggest that silicone lenses should be avoided in phacotrabeculectomy on the basis of their retrospective study of cellular precipitates on intraocular lens (IOL) surfaces. Their finding of statistically increased giant cell precipitates on plate-haptic silicone IOLs (Chiron C10UB) compared with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is consistent with the...
